Woodlands Healthcare Village.
Woodlands Hospital have ambitious plans to create the UK’s first healthcare village on their site at Morton Park, Darlington to allow patients to have access to all their healthcare needs on one site.
The Hospital’s management team want to develop the existing site to move towards a Health Village concept that provides a “one-stop shop” approach to healthcare provision in line with Prof Darzi’s “six stage” approach for the delivery of healthcare in the future.
The first stage in this multi-million pound project will comprise of an 86 bed modular nursing facility. This additional building to be built at the back of the existing Hospital will help provide more of an all round service to a larger number of both NHS and private patients in the region. The plans have been submitted to Darlington Borough Council and if the planning process goes ahead smoothly, the management team at the Woodlands hope this facility will open in January 2009.
In the longer term, as part of the healthcare village concept, the Hospital management team are hoping to have primary care facilities, such as GP surgeries located at the front of the Hospital. This will then enable all levels of patient care to be available on the one site as patients requiring further treatment after seeing their GP can access the Hospital for further tests, scans or if necessary arrange an appointment with a Consultant.
